With a relatively small population, sizable French investments, and rich forest and mineral resources, Gabon has one of the highest annual gross national products per person in sub-Saharan Africa. Keeling first visited the country backpacking in the late 1970s; he was there most recently in November of 2009 on an American Geographical Society Educational Expedition on which he lectured about Africa.
