This month’s encore presentation in our Kentucky Live! series focuses on the history of neighboring Butler County published in the Images of America series in September by Arcadia Press.

The book includes many never before seen photographs of Butler County’s rich historical culture, its religious and educational institutions, and ordinary family life. The coauthors are Roger Givens and Nancy Richey.

Givens is a Butler County native who has held a variety of occupations from barber, to coal miner, to power plant worker. He and his wife founded the Butler County Banner which they later merged with the Green River Republican, and which today is the county’s leading newspaper. Roger is a past Chair of the Morgantown-Butler County Chamber of Commerce,
The Green River Catfish Festival and the Butler County Genealogical and Historical Society. Roger’s fascination with history came from his mother “Velma” who was an antique dealer and fond of telling stories of the “old days.” With this background he launched a weekly newspaper column about the history of “people and places in Butler County.”

Richey is a native of Mt. Hermon, Kentucky. She developed her interest in local and family history from her father with whom she spent many happy hours exploring the back roads of Kentucky. She received her MA degree with an emphasis in Southern History from WKU and her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Kentucky. She’s currently the Reference and Image Librarian for the Department of Special Collections at Western Kentucky University. She serves on the board of the Janice Holt Giles Society and gives frequent workshops on Kentucky genealogy.

Their presentation is scheduled for Thursday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Butler County Library in Morgantown at 116 West Ohio Street. A book signing will follow as will a reception sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The public is cordially invited.

If you’re driving from Bowling Green, take the Natcher Parkway north to the second Morgantown-Rochester exit. Head into town and at the first light turn right and head uptown.
Turn left at Rite-Aid and take the first right up the hill past the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The library is on your left. The drive is about 25 minutes. See you there!
