Michael D. Guillerman worked for the Peabody Coal Company from 1974 to 1991. Over his long career, his jobs included belt shoveler, timberman, shooter, drill and shuttle car operator, rock duster, and finally section foreman. Now retired, he lives with his wife Marie in Union county, Kentucky.

  1. Coal mining is an extremely dangerous job, having worked in this industry, and survived in this danger zone for so many years shows a man who must be intelligent and have a can do attitude.

  6. Coal minning was not only dangerous but also very tough. My Grandfather was one for 30 years but he loved the bonding he had with the workers. I admire anyone who went down there and stuck it out.

  7. Peabody coal company is still quite active today. And successful. A recent article talks about how they will be be potentially partnering with India.

    Coal mining may be dangerous, but not as nearly dangerous as oil rigs. I’m referring to the gulf of Mexico where 11 people just died

  10. Sounds more exciting than a desk job. Actually, I knew someone who was a coal miner. It is a rather hazardous profession. It takes a lot of courage and strength.

  11. Not many people can survive long for a coal mining work. I’m sure this gentleman has certain excellent skills made he survived in this field for so many years.

  17. The goal of coal mining is to remove coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and since the 1880s is widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a “colliery”. In Australia, “colliery” generally refers to an underground coal mine.
