In order to understand popular music genres and the eras they represent, WKU Libraries is pleased to provide America’s Music: A Film History of our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway. This series will consist of seven sessions dealing with different musical genres that were born from—and reflect—uniquely American aspects of our history and culture. Each session will have a short film, which will be introduced by an expert in that genre. After the film, the expert will discuss what the musical style means to American culture, and will lead an interactive discussion.

This first segment, focusing on Rock ‘n Roll, is from the Quincy Jones-produced film showing how rock music “plugged in” by moving from acoustic to electric in the 1960s. The film begins with Bob Dylan’s rise in folk music, and runs through Monterrey Pop, Haight-Asbury, and the Vietnam protests. For more information, contact Bryan Carson at 745-5007.
