On Friday, January 18, the The Kentucky Library will be closed to the public for staff development. However, visitors can still tour the exhibits, including the nationally traveling exhibit, “Slow Time: The Art of Charley, Noah & Hazel Kinney,” and shop for after Christmas specials in the Museum Store.

Clay workshops in January
Want to learn more about pottery? On January 19 & 26 Davie Reneau will demonstrate and teach workshop participants hand building techniques including coiling, pinch pots, and slab work. These workshops are open to indiviuals age 14 and older and run from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Pre-registration required.

“International Holiday” Play
The Kentucky Library & Museum in partnership with the WKU Theatre Department offered school day performances of International Holiday to area school children. Written by Bowling Green native Mary Hall Surface, the 40 minute production explores Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas in Mexico, and New Year’s in Japan traditions. During three performances 770 children and adults attended.

Professor Nancy Baird gave an insightful presentation of the history of Christmas traditions. Where did the Christmas tree come from? Santa’s red suit? How about the real story behind The Night before Christmas? Participants also had the opportunity to make their own Christmas ornaments.

Promoting Christmas in Kentucky at WKU Homecoming Parade
The Kentucky Library& Museum participated in this year’s WKU Homecoming parade by carrying a banner promoting Christmas in Kentucky on Saturday, December 1st and distributing fliers to parade goers.

Put Some Holiday Spirit in Your Weekend!

Participants will have the opportunity to make several unique Christmas ornaments and explore traditions in their own families.

Make a Snowman Table Tunner
Join quilter extraordinaire Nancy Baird as she leads a workshop on holiday table runners. Participants must pre-register by calling Nancy at 270-745-6263.
The fee is $15 for Friends of Libraries & Museum and $20 for non-members and includes all necessary fabric, patterns and supplies. Participants must provide their own sewing machine.

Wood Carving Workshop
An enthusiastic group of woodworkers with various levels of expertise spent the morning of Saturday, September 29 working with artist Willie Rascoe at the Kentucky Library & Museum. After carving, sanding, drilling, gluing and painting everyone took home a piece of driftwood art. They all left the workshop very satisfied with his or her creations.
