Caves Exhibit Opens

Have you spent time underground exploring an unknown world and finding water-sculpted stone, crystalline formations and unusual wildlife? Do you enjoy taking photographs under unusual or challenging conditions? Come check out the “Caves: A Fragile Wilderness” at the Kentucky Library & Museum.

In addition to 39 photographs taken in caves from Alaska to Malaysia, the exhibit also includes historic caving items and mineral and plant specimens loaned by Mammoth Cave National Park as well as images from the collection of the Kentucky Library & Museum.

The exhibit runs through November 24.

Folk Art on Display

Come experience the joy and mystery of the more than 80 paintings, sculptures and drawings in the“Slow Times: The Art of Charley, Noah and Hazel Kinney” exhibit. The exhibit at the Kentucky Library & Museum runs through February 10, 2008.

Make your own sculpture or get a special take on the exhibit from artist-in-residence Lynne Ferguson.

Special hours on August 22 & 24

The Kentucky Library & Museum will close for staff training from 8 am to 1 pm on Wednesday, August 22. It will also close for staff training from 8 am to 4 pm on Friday, August 24. Normal building hours resume on August 25.

“Recommended by Duncan Hines” opening rocks!

nullOpening festivities for the “Recommended by Duncan Hines” exhibit at the Kentucky Library & Museum launched the 2007 Duncan Hines Festival. Activities held on Friday and Saturday, August 3rd & 4th included a ribbon cutting ceremony, recipe judging contest, 1950s sock hop, art show, country breakfast, chautauqua-style appearance by Duncan Hines, and costume contest.

• Duncan Hines Festival Recipe Contest, August 3, 4pm
• Festival Art Awards and Silent Auction, August 3, 5pm
• 1950s Theme Party, with antique cars, 50s rock ‘n roll and cocktails, August 3, 7pm
• Country Breakfast with presentation by Jonathan Jeffrey, August 4, 9am
• Duncan Hines Festival Children’s Pageant, August 4, 10am
• “Adventures in Good Eating: A Taste of Duncan Hines,” a presentation of the Kentucky Historical Society, written and performed by Mike Thomas, August 4, 3pm

Good Times at Summer Camps

child painting a pictureDuring the month of June, area children participated in a series of four camps – Archeology, Kentucky History, Kentucky Art and Clay – at the Kentucky Library and Museum. Participants identified arrowheads, painted a pictograph, explored Kentucky music, food, and dance, practiced painting, collage, and printmaking, and learned how to hand build clay.
