Our Spring 2006 Noontime Concert Series began. Tuesday, January 31st, from 12 noon to 1pm we had the highly acclaimed Classical/Flamenco Guitarist, Justin Osborne. Mr Osborne performed works by J.S. Bach, Francisco Tarrega and many others.

And, on Thursday, February 2nd at noon, we also presented Indianapolis based jazz pianist and recording artist, David Hepler. Mr Hepler has performed at a variety of venues including the Indianapolis Jazz Fest, The Arts Garden, The IMA, The Jazz Kitchen, The Penrod Art Fair, and The University of Indianapolis.

All through February, works by local Artist Granville Mitchell were on display at Barnes & Noble, Bowling Green.

On Friday, January 6, area residents celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by attending a reception for the opening of an exhibit honoring his contributions to American history.

“Western 100,” an exhibit chronicling student life on the Hill, opened Sunday, Jan. 22 at the Kentucky Library and Museum at Western Kentucky University. During the opening, scheduled for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, WKU President Gary Ransdell unveiled the exhibit; special music was provided by WKU choral ensembles the Red Shirts and the TrebleMakers; a number of well known personalities were on hand to greet old friends; and there was a reception.

“Western 100” was a nostalgic look at the thousands of students who had walked the Hill – from the first enrollees of Western Kentucky State Teachers College in 1907 to the current student body, now numbering more than 18,000. The story of student life was retold through dozens of photos, several murals, replicated dorm rooms, historic uniforms and trophies.

Other interesting exhibit features were a life-size cutout of Western’s founder, Dr. Henry Hardin Cherry; and a restored 1930 Chevrolet, donated to the museum some years ago by alumnus Dr. Michael Ridley of Murray.

Funding for the Centennial exhibit was provided by the University Centennial Committee.

WKU Libraries’ faculty and staff celebrated the Holiday in Four Forty Main. At the party, the Margie Helm Awards for the excellent performance by a faulty and a staff member in the past year was announced. Mike Binder, the Dean of Libraries, gave a check of 250 dollars and a certificate to each recipient of the awards. The Margie Helm Faculty Award was given to Roxanne Spencer, Coordinator of Educational Resources Center (ERC), and the award for staff was given to Ellen Micheletti, Senior ERC Library Assistant. On the evening of December 12, Professor Tom Hunley’s English 305 had another poetry jam in Java City. The first two dozens or so audience members who arrived earlier each got a free copy of Live From Java City, a booklet of the poems that Professor Hunley’s students read.
