Nancy Marshall, Paula Bowles and Their Displays

Nancy Marshall and Paula BowlesNancy Marshall and Paula Bowles of Department of Library Public Services (DLPS) create displays for WKU Libraries’ events like “Kentucky Live!” “Faraway Places,” “Black History Month” and “Banned Books Week.” Library displays started when they created a display for Banned Books Week three years ago at the request of Dr. Coutts, Head of DLPS. Now they have grown into a regular program that uses two display cases featuring presenters and their works. Those that have been on display also include WKU librarians. One of the things that Nancy and Paula did was help Dr. Pam Johnson, Professor of the Journalism Department, create a display on banned books to celebrate the 1st Amendment. It was on display in MMTH for a month.

KY Museum Photo Included in New York Exhibit

Victoria Woodhull presidential campain buttonA rare Kentucky Library & Museum photograph of an 1872 Victoria Woodhull presidential campaign button is included in an exhibit entitled “Votes for Women” at the Brooklyn [NY] Museum. Victoria Woodhull is credited as being the first woman to run for the office of U.S. President. The exhibit curator was unable to locate an original of the button in any of the nation’s major political memorabilia collections. The exhibit is sponsored by the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, which is associated with the Brooklyn Museum. The photograph comes from the Emanie (Nahm) Sachs Arling Phillips Manuscript Collection. Ms. Phillips authored a biography of Woodhull in 1928 entitled /The Terrible Siren/. The exhibit will run from February 16 to November 30, 2008.
