VSA arts of Kentucky Side by Side Exhibit Opens on January 17

The Kentucky Library & Museum and VSA arts of Kentucky have partnered to produce an exhibition of artwork created during VSA arts workshops held at the KYLM. The exhibit features artwork of students with disabilities, area artists, and the artwork they have created collaboratively. The exhibit kicks off with a reception on Sunday, January 17th, at 2:00 p.m. (CDT) and is free to the public.

VSA arts of Kentucky is a statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting arts, education and creative expression for all, with an emphasis on persons with disabilities.

Kentucky Library & Museum toys & cards now on exhibit at Historic Riverview

Christmas tree with toys A selection of toys, games and fringed holiday cards are now on loan to Historic Riverview at Hobson Grove as part of its Victorian Holiday tour. During the tour which runs from now until the Friday before Christmas, visitors to Riverview are transported back in time to Christmas 1890 in the setting of Atwood and Julia Hobson’s three-story Italianate home, including a parlor outfitted with the 19th century holiday rage: the quaint and breath-taking Christmas tree, complete with antique decorations and toys.

WKU Students Decorate Holiday Trees

Holiday trees at Kentucky Library & MuseumThe Kentucky Library & Museum hosted the first annual WKU Student Organizations Holiday Ornament Competition. Each organization was given a bag of basic ornament making supplies and a tree to decorate. A tree decorating reception was held November 17th with celebrity judge Romanza Johnson and everyone’s favorite Hilltopper, Big Red. Trees will be on display in the Kentucky Room through January 4, 2010.

Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule at Kentucky Library & Museum

Thanksgiving greeting graphicLooking for a place to entertain the relatives over the Thanksgiving holiday? Come to the Kentucky Library & Museum. Featuring more than 500 pieces of furniture, paintings and other decorative art items that date from as early as 1300 B.C. to the mid-twentieth century, the Snell-Franklin Decorative Arts Gallery at the Kentucky Library & Museum offers an alternative to the usual post-Thanksgiving activities. The Civil War enthusiasts will enjoy viewing, “A Star in Each Flag: Conflict in Kentucky.” Nostalgia buffs may want to wander down memory lane in “Recommended by Duncan Hines,” an exhibit about Bowling Green’s most famous food icon.

The Kentucky Museum exhibits are open every day this week but Thanksgiving Day. The Harrison-Baird Reading Room is closed throughout the entire holiday period.

Cinderella with a Multi-cultural Twist

Cinderella performersThe WKU Theatre Department performed “Cinderella: The World’s Favorite Fairy Tale” for school audiences at the Kentucky Library & Museum. The story of Cinderella as she is known in China, Russian and by Native Americans as told by Cinderella herself.

Snell-Franklin Gallery opens on Friday, November 13th

Snell-Franklin Decorative Arts GalleryFeaturing more than 500 pieces of furniture, paintings and other decorative art items that date from as early as 1300 B.C. to the mid-twentieth century, theSnell-Franklin Gallery at the Kentucky Library & Museum opened on Friday, November 13, 2009.

Timothy Mullin, Director of the Kentucky Library & Museum, said, “With the exception of the Snell European collection, most of the pieces are from the state of Kentucky. There are Shaker pieces from South Union and Mt. Pleasant and several wonderful pieces from our own university including a table and glassware set that former President Cherry owned.”

The festivities kicked off with a Chamber ribbon cutting in the morning and concluded with an evening reception with a Roaring Twenties theme. Community members and WKU faculty and staff attended the evening event.

Special KYLM Hours on Saturday, October 31st

Due to the running of the Medical Center 10K Classic, the Kentucky Library & Museum will open at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 31st. Regular hours resume on Sunday, November 1st.

Tie Dye Workshop

Tie Dye Workshop Instructor Dr. Laura McGee

Western students had fun Saturday, October 17th, at the Kentucky Library & Museum learning the techniques of fabric dying. Dr. Laura McGee did a demonstration for the students. Some students were so enthused they completed two tie dyed scarves!

Fall Art Camp

fall art camp projectTwenty two local children spent their fall break at the Kentucky Library & Museum Arts Day Camp. While they were aptly improving their artistic skills, the campers also recycled waste paper into new hand made paper and learned about fabric transfer by designing and creating their own t-shirts. After-campers spent time learning about Kentucky history by spending time in the A Star In Each Flag: Conflict in Kentucky exhibit.
