US Bank Celebration of the Arts Award Ceremony

More than 400 artists, family members and friends showed up Friday, February 24 for the US Bank Celebration of the Arts award ceremony and reception kicking off the largest art exhibition in the region. About 190 artists displayed more than 350 works of art in categories of Painting, Watercolor, Ceramics and Glass, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Works on Paper, and Photography.

Interim Dean Connie Foster welcomed the group and US Bank representative Greg Wassom shared a few words on behalf of US Bank. Kentucky Museum Director Timothy Mullin announced the winners in each of the categories for both amateur and professional levels with Foster and Wassom assisting in award distribution.

Best of Show was awarded to Steve Clay with his sketching of Down the Drain and Jacqui Lubbers received the Purchase Award for her fiber arts A Come Apart.

The Spring Java City Concert Series continues at noon today with a performance by master musician from Nashville Dave Issacs.  Hailed as one of the most talented performers on the planet by audiogrid.com, Dave is a world class guitarist who has played everywhere from dive bars to concert halls.

Far Away Places: To Kill a Tiger: a Memoir of Korea

jidlee_s On the evening of Februrary 16, 2012, Professor Jid Lee from Middle Tennessee State University spoke about her book To Kill a Tiger: A Memoir of Korea, a personal narrative of her girlhood in a traditional South Korean family against the traumatic events of recent Korean history including the Japanese occupation. Her lecture is part of the Libraries’ Far Away talk series that take place monthly at Bowling Green Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Campbell Lane. The event concluded with book signing.

Online Exhibits

A new section has been added to TopScholar:  Kentucky Museum / Library Special Collections Online Exhibits.  The site features images of objects, photographs and documents used in exhibits with more background information than is inclued in a typical museum label.  The site includes a blog widgets for user comments which will enhance our knowledge of objects and photographs.  The Google maps / Google Earth widget allows us place objects and photographs in geographical relation to others.

Currently there are two completed online exhibits.  The first is Get on the Bus: 40 Years of Political Activism.  Originally created in 2008 as a traveling exhibit to commemorate the Civil Rights movement, this online exhibit focuses on WKU students’ involvement in political causes through the years.

The second is Playing Our Song: Southern Kentucky Notes which highlights the Kentucky Library’s Southern Kentucky Music Collection as well as WKU faculty, staff, student and alumni musicians.

Henry Cherry’s Interest Wide Ranging

President Henry Cherry was a man of many and varied interests and we know this by the scrapbooks he had created during his administration 1906-1937.  These are held in WKU Archives and we are about half way through processing them.  Most of the scrapbooks are in good condition.  While education and Western Kentucky University head the list of topics covered, religion, the Temperance Movement and World War I are well represented.  There are several scrapbooks dedicated to Cherry’s own personal political aspirations, his candidacy for Kentucky governor and his promotion of rural life through chautaquas held in Warren and the surrounding counties.

The collection inventory has been posted on TopScholar and gives more detail regarding these materials.  These and many other records are available for researchers through our online catalog, KenCat and in the Harrison-Baird Reading Room of the Kentucky Library & Museum Monday – Saturday, 9 – 4.

Lincoln’s Leadership and Communication Style

Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address

Monday, November 14, Dr. Cecile Garmon discussed “Lincoln’s Leadership and Communication Style.” As part of the travelling exhibition “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” Dr. Garmon gave an in-depth analysis of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. She discussed Lincoln’s use of rhetorical devices throughout the speech and how his masterful communication style aided him in his leadership position.  The program continues tonight at the Kentucky Museum.  Tonight’s topic is Lincoln and the Emancipation proclamation.  This free event begins at 7:00 pm.  All are welcome to attend.

Lincoln Exhibition Continues with Minter’s Presentation

On the evening of November 7, 2011, Dr. Patricia Minter from the History Department discussed “Lincoln, Civil Liberties, and Habeas Corpus.” She discussed Lincoln’s handling of anti-war protest and civil rights. This was an important issue with many parallels being made between the civil war and the war on terror. The lecture was part of the travelling exhibition “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War.”

WKU Libraries 5th Most Visited of WKU Web Sites

WKU Libraries' Web homepgeWKU Libraries’ Web site with its One-Search Box hit the Top 5 most visited Web sites from WKU’s homepage for the month of October with 48,434 visits immediately after it’s new look’s debut in the OUCampus content management system.

According to WKU Public Affairs, the Google Analytics reports that WKU Libraries came in fifth after the WKU homepage, Webmail, Current Students landing page and Academics landing page.

Way to go WKU Libraries!!!
