Dr. Jerry W. Passon, who teaches English and technical writing at Hopkinsville Community College, gave a talk on corvette in literature and culture as an American symbol at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Bowling Green, KY on the evening of November 10, 2011. The event was the last of the “Kentucky Live! Southern Culture at Its Best” talks series organized by the WKU Libraries.

WKU Libraries Kicked Off Month-long Traveling Exhibition of Lincoln
On the evening of November 3, 2011 in the Western Room of Kentucky Building, WKU Libraries kicked off the month-long traveling exhibition titled “Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War with the “Background of Conflict and the Election of 1860” presentation given by Carol Crowe-Carraco, WKU Professor of History, and Nancy Baird, Kentucky Historian. This exhbition was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs and was made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“Increasing Your Scholarly Footprint” to Celebrate International Open Access Week
WKU Libraries celebrated the International Open Access Week with a forum in Room 100, Helm Library on October 25. Speaking at the forum were Dr. Mary Bennett, APRN Director, WKU School of Nursing; Dr. John Cipolla, WKU Associate Professor of Music; and Dr. Aaron Hughey, WKU Professor of Counseling and Student Affairs. They presented their experience with TopSCHOLAR, WKU’s institutional repository. Connie Foster, Interim Dean of WKU Libraries, presided over the forum and gave an opening remark. The forum was followed by questions and answers and a reception that featured a beautiful cake.
This year’s International Open Access Week took place from October 24 through 30.

Alabama Bluesman Russell Gulley Performed at Java City Today
Alabama bluesman Russell Gulley performed at Java City today. His set included originals like “Sand Mountain Mule” and covers of classic tunes like “Bo Diddly” and “Love in Vain.” In between songs, this top-notch performer offered up reminiscences of his youth in the rural south and some informal notes on the history of the blues.

WKU Libraries Celebrated Halloween with a Potluck Party
WKU Libraries celebrated Halloween with a potluck party on October 31, 2011 in Cravens 111. Crystal Bowling, Senior Catalog Assistant from the Department of Library Technical Services, won the first prize for her costume in the costume contest during the party. Many left happily with a door prize donated by the Libraries’ employees. Glenda White and Jan Renusch from the Dean’s Office led volunteers in organizing the party.

New in the Visual and Performing Arts Library (VPAL)
One of Dr. Brian Coutts’ recent donations to WKU Libraries is the stunning two-volume set, The Story of Underwear. Volume 1 is The Story of Men’s Underwear by Shaun Cole; Volume 2 is The Story of Women’s Underwear by Muriel Barbier and Shazia Boucher. Both books are heavily illustrated with photographs of vintage and modern examples of useful and decorative underclothes, while a scholarly text explains the history and significance of the garments.
The Story of Underwear was listed in Library Journal’s “Best Reference 2010 Resources”.
A featured book review (by Brian Coutts and Therese Duzinkiewicz Baker) about the set was published in the Bowling Green Daily News, Sunday, July 31, 2011. The books are shelved in the VPAL , call number VPAL REF GT2073 .S76x 2010.

Six images and Ed Givens play by play of the WKU – University of Michigan 1966 NCAA game are now available online. Cazzie Russell & Greg Smith go for the ball and in the end the official calls a foul on Smith. With only 11 seconds remaining, Russell sinks both free throws to take Michigan to a heartbreaking 80-79 victory over the Hilltoppers. Were you at the game? Do you have a memory to share about it?

Java City Noon Concert Featured LVNMUZIQ
Today Grand Rapids Michigan Native Liz Snavely aka LVNMUZIQ played her lyrical, thoughtful brand of modern urban folk music. Her voice reminiscent of Natalie Merchant, Liz wove a complex melodic enchantment over the crowd at Java City to the delight of everyone.
