Hands on Art Camp

Students build clay potsCampers spent five busy days learning hand building clay techniques that included pinch pots, coiling, and slab work with drapes and moulds. The campers also spent a day visiting the WKU ceramic studio where they tried their hands at a pottery wheel. They ended the week eating ice cream sundaes from ceramic bowls made at the ceramic studio.

Paint Like Summer Camp

Art camp participantsLed by Alice Gatewood Waddell, campers were introduced to the techniques and styles of five modern artist, Romare Bearden, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. They experimented with splattering, pouring, and brushing acrylic paint, watercolors, and collage.

The Good Ole Days

Participants at this year’s Camp Kentucky did all of that! Camp Kentucky was led by Eileen Starr and Amy McCray.

Basket Making Exhibit Opened on Saturday

photos from exhibit opening “Baskets from Home: White Oak Baskets of South Central Kentucky” opened on Saturday, April 29 at the Kentucky Library and Museum. This exhibit was partially funded by a grant from Western Kentucky University Provost’s Initiatives for Excellence (PIE) and the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology.

VSA Side By Side Exhibit Reception

reception for VSA exhibitThe opening reception for *SIDE BY SIDE 2006* – a collaborative exhibition of artwork created by young artists with disabilities and local artists – took place on April 22. The exhibit was a partnership between the Kentucky Library and Museum and VSA Arts of Kentucky. The Kelly Autism Center at Western Kentucky University also participated in this project.

WKU Libraries’ Java City Events

On Wednesday afternoon, WKU Libraries and Java City hosted a public forum presided over by Political Science Professor Saundra Ardrey. The forum stemmed from the conference on “National Security, Homeland Security and You.

On Tuesday, April 25th we had the alt-country sound of Redroof starring Cortney Basham, and on Wednesday, April 26, WKU music Professor Heidi Pintner led her flute choir in another powerful and inspiring concert.

Spring Break Day Campers at Kentucky Library and Museum

children attending spring break day camp Spring break day camp held at the Kentucky Museum on the campus of Western Kentucky University received rave reviews from the campers. Participants enjoyed many art activities from painting designs on a papier-mache rock ledge and portraits of their pets to creating 3-D collages and making booklets using their very own hand marbleized paper.

Nashville Recording Artist Beau Bristow Performed at Java City Again

Beau Bristow performing in Java CityNashville Recording Artist Beau Bristow performed once again at the Libaries’ Java City on April 19th. Beau last appeared at Western with Sarah Peacock. One reviewer from Alabama recently remarked about Beau’s ” extraordinary ability to articulate human emotions, dreams, and desires in his songwriting and his personal presentation of those songs. Beau connects to each listener on a different level.”

Faraway Places Lecture on Portugal This Thursday

Dr. Shawn Parkhurst from the Dept. of Anthropology, University of Louisville gave a lecture on Portual at Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Campbell Lane, Bowling Green on Thursday evening, April 13. A native of Oregon, Shawn received his PhD in Cultural Studies from UC Berkeley in 2000. Photos of the event are available.
