Faraway Places Presented Heather McKillop

Heather McKillop talking about Underwater MayaWKU Libraries Far Away Places lecture series featured Heather McKillop in Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Bowling Green, KY, on November 15, 2007. Her topic was “Underwater Maya: Wooden Buildings on the Sea Floor.” Audience numbered nearly seventy. she also signed her books at the end of the lecture.

Heather McKillop is the William G. Haag Professor of Archeology in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She has been doing fieldwork on the coast of Belize since 1979, focusing on the ancient Mayan economy, particularly the inundated salt workshops of ancient Maya.

Uma Doraiswamy gave a lecture on South IndiaUma Doraiswamy, WKU’s Social Sciences Catalog Librarian, talked about South India in this week’s Faraway Places Series on Thursday, October 18th at Barnes & Noble. Southern India comprises the four states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in addition to the two Union Territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry, whose inhabitants are collectively referred to as Southern Indians. Far Away Places: the Sahara

David Keeling, Head of Geography and Geology, talked about the Sahara in this week’s Far Away Places Series on Thursday, September 20th at Barnes & Noble.

Keeling traveled to the Sahara last October and November as Expedition Lecturer for the American Geographical Society’s educational expedition programs.

They include WKU faculty and students as well as Bowling Green community members.

Faraway Places Featured Ronald Messier

Morocco

This Thursday, November 16, 2006, Ronald Messier, Professor of Middle East history at Vanderbilt University, talked about Medieval Morocco in our Faraway Places series at Barnes & Noble. Prof. Messier directed the excavation of the ancient city of Sijilmasa in southeastern Morocco, famous for its gold trade and its contacts with Timbuktu and other cities in West Africa. Since 2004 he has been at work excavating medieval Aghmat 30 km from Marrakech, the chief commercial and cultural center of the region prior to the arrival of the Almoravids.

Faraway Places Series Featured Dr. David Keeling

Turkey

University Libraries featured Dr. David Keeling, Head of WKU Geography and Geology Department, talked about Turkey at Barnes & Noble on the evening of October 19 in its monthly Faraway Places international talk series. Dr. Keeling talked about the geopolitics of this only Muslim democracy in the world to fifty WKU faculty and students as well as community members of Bowling Green.

Faraway Places Lecture on Chinese Folktales

book coverOn the evening of Thursday, September 21, Haiwang Yuan, author of The Magic Lotus Lantern and Other Tales from the Han Chinese, gave a presentation at Barnes & Noble on the topic of “Tales from the Han Chinese and What They Tell Us.” He also signed his books the audience purchased. Over seventy people from the community and WKU attended the lecture. Many of them were WKU students.

Faraway Places Lecture on Portugal This Thursday

Dr. Shawn Parkhurst from the Dept. of Anthropology, University of Louisville gave a lecture on Portual at Barnes & Noble Booksellers on Campbell Lane, Bowling Green on Thursday evening, April 13. A native of Oregon, Shawn received his PhD in Cultural Studies from UC Berkeley in 2000. Photos of the event are available.
