Singer/Songwriter Lee Quick Performed in Java City
Classically trained musician and singer/songwriter Lee Quick performed her unique and often funny music for the crowd at Java City on Wednesday the 11th. Lee hails originally from New Orleans but after Katrina now resides in Nashville and is pursuing a Masters in Music Education.

WKU Libraries Hosted Wildlife Specialist Tom Barnes at Barnes & Noble
WKU Libraries hosted noted wildlife specialist Tom Barnes Thursday, February 12 at Barnes & Noble Booksellers as part of its Kentucky Live! Series. As Professor of Forestry and Wildlife Specialist at the University of Kentucky, he is a frequent commentator on wildlife management and animal damage control.
“Barnes is a frequent author for Kentucky Gardener, Kentucky Home and Gardening Magazine, Kentucky Afield and Back Home in Kentucky,†said Brian Coutts, Department Head of Public Services at WKU Libraries. “He’s regularly seen and heard on Kentucky radio and television and has presented more than 400 educational programs on a variety of wildlife related topics.â€
In 1998 his first book Gardening for the Birds was published by the University Press of Kentucky. He followed that with a stunningly beautiful Kentucky’s Last Great Places in 2002 which included observations, anecdotes, and more than 100 of his full-color photos drawn from a thirteen-year exploration of little studied areas of the state. In 2004 he published Wildflowers and Ferns of Kentucky. His newest book Rare Wildflowers of Kentucky authored with Deborah White and Marc Evans documents Kentucky’s signature rare plants and includes 220 gorgeous full color photographs by Barnes. Barnes signed copies of his newest book following the presentation.

Macy’s Used Book Sale Held at Depot
Sponsored by Macy’s, the Southern Kentucky Book Fest partners held their annual used book sale at the Depot, Bowling Green, Kentucky, from January 27 and 28 through February 1. This event was to raise fund for the Book Fest to take place in April. Used books and audio and visual tapes and discs were donated by the Bowling Green community members.

Mary Groves’ Going-Away Party
On January 29, 2009, the Dean’s Office of WKU Libraries held a party to honor Mary Groves, who is retiring at the end of this month after working as an Office Assistant in the Dean’s Office for 20 years.

Dean’s Office Celebrated Holiday at Breakfast
Employees of the Office of the Dean of University Libraries had its annual holiday breakfast at Cracker Barrel on the morning of December 12, 2008. Gifts were exchanged between the staff of the office and its student worker Candace Rogers, who is now graduating.

Annual Holiday Luncheon & Award Ceremony Held in Montana Grill
Western Kentucky University Libraries held its annual Holiday Luncheon & Award Ceremony at the Montana Grill restaurant on December 11, 2008. Over seventy employees attended plus some retirees.
At the luncheon Margie Helm Awards for Outstanding Performance were also given to faculty, staff, and student workers. For the first year, teams were also awarded. Charles Smith from the Public Services Department received the Faculty Award and Jan Renusch from the Dean’s Office received the Staff Award. Students who received the Award included Candace Rogers from the Dean’s Office; Josten Wilson from the Public Services Department; Josh Mosby from the Technical Services Department; and Geoffrey McMahon, Evan McMahon and Blake Mattingly from the Special Collections Department. The award-winning teams were "A Star in Each Flag" consisting of Sandy Staebell, Timothy Mullin, Donna Parker, Christy Spurlock, Jonathan Jeffrey, Sue Lynn McDaniel and Nancy Baird; "The MARCIVE Retrospective Conversion Project" comprising Rosemary Meszaros, Nada Durham, Debbie Lamastus, Dewayne Stovall, Rose Davis, Nelda Sims and Linda Davis; and "Planning the Visual & Performing Arts Library" embodying Therese Baker, Brent Fisk, Michael Franklin, Brian Coutts, Dan Forrest, Matt Bogard, Doug Wiles, David Runner and Nancy Steen.
The luncheon concluded with a group singing led by Jack Montgomery, Jeannie Butler, Jennifer Wilson, Mary Groves and Mike Binder.

Party Honoring Graduating Student Workers
On the morning of December 10, 2008, the Dean’s Office of WKU Libraries held a party for graduating student workers. They were Candace Rogers from the Dean’s Office, Crystal Bowling from the Library Technical Services, and Josten Wilson, Charity Gore, and Heather Huber from the Library Public Services (DLPS). Dean Mike Binder greeted the students, and Head of DLPS Brian Coutts commented on the great service these students did to the Libraries. Food brought in by faculty and staff was served at the party.

Doris Retires After 40 Years of Service
Bibliographic Access of the Department of Library Technical Services (DLTS) at WKU gave a retirement reception on December 9, 2008 in the DLTS Break Room in honor of Doris Hardcastle’s 40 years of service to the Department and University Libraries. Dean Mike Binder, Department Head Connie Foster and Bibliographic Access Coordinator Rose Davis gave their laudatory comments on Doris’ loyal and diligent service. At the end of the reception, colleagues presented her with gifts and cards of good wishes.

“Christmas in Kentucky” Activities at KY Museum
On December 6, 2008, about a thousand attendees including children of different ages participated in the free, fun-filled family activities throughout the Kentucky Museum featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus, Big Red, ornament making, Christmas carolers, dramatic performances and much more. This year’s theme was the “Civil War in Kentucky!” Light refreshments were provided free.
