Kentucky Writers Conference (free program)

Kentucky Writers ConferenceFree sessions were held at WKU’s South Campus on April 18, 2008. Featured presenters included: Journalist Penny Loeb, Poets John Guzlowski and Lynnell Major Edwards, Fiction Writers Beverle Graves Myers, Deborah LeBlanc and Kathleen Ernst, and Editor Morris A. Grubbs. This was part of the Southern Kentucky Book Fest events.

Far Away Places: Vietnam

Prof. Binh P. LeBinh P. Le, associate librarian at Penn State University at Abington, talked about Vietnam in the University Libraries’ “Faraway Places Series” on April 17 at Barnes & Noble. Binh Le has researched Vietnam’s economic transformation, 1986-2000, and has recently been awarded the LPSS Marta Lange/CQ Press Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Kentucky Writers Conference (with registration fee)

Kentucky Writers ConferenceNew this year, there was a special night for writers on April 17 at the Bowling Green Public Library. Those who registered for this charged event attended sessions given by Terry Kay and George Ella Lyon respectively. This is part of the annual Kentucky Writers Conference that continues on April 18 on WKU’s South Campus. It is free and open to all WKU and community members.

Kentucky Live! “Appalachian Home Cooking”

Dr. Mark F. SohnDr. Mark F. Sohn, a food historian, and Pikeville College professor, presented “Appalachian Home Cooking” at Barnes & Noble on Thursday, April 10, 2008. Dr. Sohn showed how food traditions in Appalachia had developed over two centuries from dinner on the grounds, church picnics, school lunches, and family reunions as he celebrated regional signatures such as dumplings, moonshine, and country ham. This program was part of the “Kentucky Live!” series organized by the WKU Libraries.

Farewell Reception for Matt Bogard

Matt BogardAfter almost 4 years with WKU Libraries as Facilities Specialist for DLPS, Matt Bogard will be leaving us April 6th to take a Market Research position with Enrollment Management in Academic Affairs.

While we will miss Matt and greatly appreciate his outstanding work, we want to wish him the best of success in his new position.

University Libraries Faculty Award Winners

Connie Foster and Haiwang Yuan, winners of faculty awardsWestern Kentucky University annually recognizes outstanding contributions by faculty members in the areas of Teaching, Research/Creativity, Public Service, and Student Advisement.

From University Libraries, Connie Foster, Head of Department of Library Technology Services, and Haiwang Yuan, Web Site & Virtual Library Coordinator, won the college-level awards for Public Services and Research/Creativity respectively. They are also the finalists for the university-wide awards.

A number of their colleagues went to their reception at the Student Success Center in DUC to congratulate them.

Dr. Michael TrapassoDr. Michael Trapasso, professor in the Geography and Geology Department at WKU, talked about Easter Island in the University Libraries’ Faraway Places Series on Thursday, March 20th at Barnes & Noble.

Easter Island has long been known as an Island of Mystery. In reality, scientists have studied this island and its inhabitants for decades and much of the mystery has been cleared away.
