Composed of more than 66,000 pieces, the unique Spectrum Quilt can be seen through October 28 as part of an exhibit, Man-Made Quilts: the Civil War to the Present, at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. Its maker, George Yarrall, was an immigrant from New Zealand who worked as an engraver at Morris Jewelry in Bowling Green, KY.  Yarrall not only kept the colored paper template used in designing the textile, he also recorded in a handwritten note that the quilt was started on July 2, 1933 and finished two years later on December 30, 1935. The Spectrum Quilt is one of four quilts in the Kentucky Museum collection of nearly 200 quilts that are attributed to men.

WKU Students Receive Undergraduate Library Research Awards

029

Bowling Green, Kentucky – Western Kentucky University students Christina Costa from Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Dominique Dillard from Louisville, Kentucky, were each given an undergraduate research award at a recognition ceremony in Helm Library on Thursday, April 26.  WKU Libraries and WKU University Experience faculty teamed up last year to begin offering the awards in an effort to recognize the important role of good undergraduate research in college academic success.

“It’s important for students to recognize the role research plays in their college experience and we try to do that as a part of the University Experience course,” said Sara McCaslin, University Experience Coordinator.

Dillard, a first-year student from the University Experience class at South Campus, was recognized for the best career essay. Costa, a second-year student from the University Experience class on the main campus, received an award for the best annotated bibliography.

According to Costa, who is currently undecided on her major, the experience was a positive one. “I greatly enjoyed researching for the annotated bibliography. It gives me a new avenue to explore for my future,” says Costa.

“Students and teachers in entry level courses need encouragement to keep going for the long stretch,” said Carol Watwood, WKU librarian and selection committee chair. “It is a great privilege to work with young people in higher education and watch them succeed.”

Dillard’s University Experience instructor was Kim Cunningham at South Campus and Costa’s was Paula Trafton on the main campus. Both students received a $100 cash award along with a plaque honoring their achievements. The winning documents, along with past recipients, are posted in TopSCHOLAR–WKU’s research and creative activity database–at http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/ueul_award/. For more information, contact Carol Watwood, chair of the Research Award Committee, at 270-745-6977.

Matthew Lyon: A Lion For Free Speech

A broadside found in the Moore House at 801 State Street in Bowling Green reveals resolutions supporting Matthew Lyon and his bid for the election of 1802. Lyon was born in Ireland in 1749 but immigrated to Connecticut in 1764. He served with the Green Mountain Boys and lived in Vermont before moving to Kentucky. He served four terms as the Congressional Representative from the Western District of Kentucky and was first elected in the fall of 1802.  Lyon was the first person to be put to trial for violating the Alien and Sedition Acts and criticizing President John Adams thus becoming a defender of free speech rights. The broadside entitled, Resolutions of the Corresponding Society was produced in Russellville, KY and condemns the criticisms of Lyon. Bachelors Beware: It’s Leap Year!

Brute!

Library Special Collections has numerous leap year postcards.

In the Jackson Gallery at the Kentucky Building, an exhibit of leap year postcards, comic valentines, dance cards, photographs, correspondence and ephemera focuses on American interpretation of leap year customs between 1850 and 1950. Invitations and newspaper accounts depict the concept’s use in 1888 as a focal point for social events.  Curator Sue Lynn McDaniel’s interest in American courtship customs first prompted her to collect and then donate many of the early-twentieth century postcards which evince the humorous way single females and males enjoyed the suggestion that usual courtship etiquette was suspended during leap years.  The exhibit runs through June 2012. For more information on Library Special Collections’ holdings, see: http://wku.pastperfect-online.com/35749cgi/mweb.exe?request=keyword;keyword=leap%20year;dtype=d
