On November 21, on behalf of WKU Libraries and the Southern Kentucky Book Fest Partners, Dean of Libraries Mike Binder presented the Evelyn Thurman Young Readers Book Award to John Adams and Barbara L. Gibson, the author and illustrator of The Dragon Fly Door during a luncheon at The Kentucky Library and Museum.
Prior to the luncheon and the award ceremony, the author John Adams visited Bowling Green schools and signed and donated books for the children.

Dr. Roger D. Launius, Curator of the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian, spoke for Western Kentucky University Libraries’ Far Away Places series, on Thursday, November 20th at Barnes & Noble.
Dr. Launius is considered one of the nation’s most prominent space historians and has authored or edited more than 25 books. His latest book, Robots in Space: Technology, Evolution and Interplanetary Travel, published by Johns Hopkins University Press, was the topic of discussion. In the book, Lanius and co-author Howard McCurdy of American University address the issue of how to best explore space: with humans or robots.
This event had more than eighty attendees, mostly WKU faculty and students, with some coming from the Bowling Green community.

Internationally recognized singer/songwriter Anne MacFie of Stanton, KY delighted the audience today with her original songs and stories. A consummate performer, Ms MacFie will certainly be asked back to Java City for a repeat performance.

On the morning of November 19, WKU Libraries’ “Faraway Places” program presented Dr. David Keeling, Head of Department of Geology and Geography, WKU, in Helm Library 100. He talked about the geoethnic and geopolitical issues of Russia to an audience of faculty, staff and students. This is part of the International Education Week events sponsored by the WKU Office of International Programs.

The International Education Week sponsored by the WKU Office of International Programs and hosted by WKU Libraries presented Prof. Haiwang Yuan, Web Coordinator of the Libraries and author of Chinese folktales. He gave a presentation first to the library faculty and staff and then a group of middle school students from Russellville, Kentucky.
The presentation was about China’s ethnic diversity and contrasting lives of Chinese. At the end of his conversation, he gave out his book Princess Peacock: Tales from the Other Peoples of China (Libraries Unlimited, 2008) that he signed to the winner of a door prize. Then Garry and Doug took the students on a library tour.

Donna Beasley and her husband/guitarist Tom Spaulding gave a excellent performance in the cafe last Wednesday. Their stylish renderings of modern and original country tunes was well received and they will certainly be back for a return performance.

Western Kentucky University Athletics and Charles M. Moore Insurance presented “Books & Baskets†at the Lady Toppers’ home game on Nov. 14.
The Lady Toppers season opener against Murray State started at 8 p.m. Fans who donated a new or gently used children’s book received one free reserved ticket to the game. Book collection began at Entrances 1 and 4 at Diddle Arena at 7 p.m. Donated books will be given to area organizations that support children in need.
The collaboration was prompted by Coach Mary Taylor Cowles’ soon to be released children’s book “Dream Big!†which is about her lifelong goal to be a Lady Topper. WKU received a grant earlier this year from the NCAA to produce the book that will be distributed free to children in grades 3-5 in Bowling Green and Warren County schools. Drobocky Orthodontics is the book sponsor.
In addition to the “Books & Baskets†event, Coach Cowles will appear at schools in Logan County as part of the Book Fest partners “Fall into Books†authors event the following week.
“Fall into Books†will take place Nov. 17-21. The Book Fest partners, with Citizens First Bank, will sponsor visits to area schools by notable children’s authors Mary Downing Hahn, Pam Walker and John Adams. Adams is a 2008 winner of the WKU Libraries’ Evelyn Thurman Young Readers Book Award. The Book Fest partners will also purchase and distribute free books by these authors to students at some of the neediest schools that receive author visits.
SOKY Book Fest is a partnership project of WKU Libraries, Warren County Public Library, and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. The partnership’s mission is to encourage reading and the love of books and to be a positive force in promoting literacy in the region and state.

WKU Libraries’ “Kentucky Live!” program presented Prof. Brian Leung from the Department of English, University of Louisville on the evening of November 13, 2008. He talked about creative writing and his world-famous books to an audience consisting of mainly WKU students in Barnes and Noble’s conference room. He signed his books after his talk.

Fliers and candy were distributed to promote “Christmas in Kentucky Saturday”, December 6th at the KYLM. Christmas in Kentucky is a free, family oriented afternoon of holiday activities including; ornament making, carolers, Santa, Big Red and much more. Come join in the fun Saturday, December 6th 11:00am-2:00pm.
