The Presidential Campaign Came to WKU

Benjamin McKenzie at Western campaigning for ObamaOn May 1 at noon, television actor Benjamin McKenzie spoke on behalf of presidential candidate Barack Obama at the Java City patio outside Helm Library. Over a hundred students and WKU employees showed up.

Benjamin McKenzie graduated from the University of Virginia and, following his graduation, moved to New York to pursue his passion for acting. While in New York he appeared off-Broadway in “Life is a Dream” at the Soho Rep. Additionally, he performed in numerous productions at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Faculty Awardees Attended Recognition Dinner

Faculty Award Recognition DinnerOn the evening of April 30, 2008, WKU gave a recognition dinner in honor of the 2008 Faculty Awardees. Among the winners were Connie Foster and Haiwang Yuan from the University Libraries, who won the Public Services and Research/Creativity Awards respectively. At the dinner were also Connie’s husband Tom Foster and Haiwang’s wife Shizhen Gao. Mike Binder, Dean of Libraries, and Brian Coutts, Head of Department of Library Public Services, were present to congratulate Connie and Haiwang.

VPAL Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting

Cutting the CakeGrand Opening of the Visual and Performing Arts Library (VPAL) began at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 on the second floor of the Cravens Library. Festivities included Art Exhibit by Art Department Faculty, Costume Display by the Theatre & Dance Department, Interior Design illustrations by the Design, Merchandising & Textiles Department, and the WKU Brass Quintet performance.

Live models in costumesAt 2:30, remarks took place in VPAL’s new InfoLab. Mike Binder, Dean of Libraries, welcomed everyone, gave thanks to those responsible, and introduced Provost Barbara Burch, who made positive comments about the new facility and the work done to make it possible. Brian Coutts, Department Head of Library Public Services, spoke about VPAL and its collections and services. He also introduced Terri Baker, VPAL Coordinator, who talked about the nature of the facility and introduced her staff.

After everyone spoke the ribbon-cutting ceremony began. Provost Burch cut the ribbon and those who joined her were Debbie Pace, John Williams, Mike Binder, Brian Coutts, and Terri Baker. Then attendees to the opening proceeded to the conference room where a cake for celebrating the occasion was waiting. Drs. Binder and Burch cut the cake.

Prior to the abovementioned activities, VPAL staffer Brent Fisk gave Provost Burch along with Richard Miller and Mike Dale a tour around the facility, showing them the KICII machine, the Lila Green Listening Area, our Listening Rooms and HD TV’s and Bose sound systems.

SOKY Book Fest 2008

Marc BrownThe 2008 SOKY Book Fest was our 10th. Over 160 authors were present at the book fest, including Mitch Albom, Marc Brown, Harlan Coben, and Kathleen Emst. We had several special anniversary celebrations during the event, which was a fund-raiser for the promotion of literacy in our community. The Book Fest was recently named one of Kentucky’s Top 10 Events and has been attracting people from several surrounding states.

Meet the Authors at the Club at Olde Stone

Meet the Author Social EventOn the evening of April 18, 2008, the Southern Kentucky Book Fest partners held its “Meet the Author” reception at the Club at Olde Stone in Alvaton, Kentucky. Local dignitaries and authors met at this social and fund-raising event.

Kentucky Writers Conference (free program)

Kentucky Writers ConferenceFree sessions were held at WKU’s South Campus on April 18, 2008. Featured presenters included: Journalist Penny Loeb, Poets John Guzlowski and Lynnell Major Edwards, Fiction Writers Beverle Graves Myers, Deborah LeBlanc and Kathleen Ernst, and Editor Morris A. Grubbs. This was part of the Southern Kentucky Book Fest events.

Far Away Places: Vietnam

Prof. Binh P. LeBinh P. Le, associate librarian at Penn State University at Abington, talked about Vietnam in the University Libraries’ “Faraway Places Series” on April 17 at Barnes & Noble. Binh Le has researched Vietnam’s economic transformation, 1986-2000, and has recently been awarded the LPSS Marta Lange/CQ Press Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Kentucky Writers Conference (with registration fee)

Kentucky Writers ConferenceNew this year, there was a special night for writers on April 17 at the Bowling Green Public Library. Those who registered for this charged event attended sessions given by Terry Kay and George Ella Lyon respectively. This is part of the annual Kentucky Writers Conference that continues on April 18 on WKU’s South Campus. It is free and open to all WKU and community members.

DLPS Meeting at Glasgow Campus Library

State of the Art

children with sculptureOver Spring Break, Warren County grade school students took the opportunity to learn about three-dimensional art. Campers learned techniques for sculpting with clay, wire, foam, plastic, and paper. The children found inspiration in the new sculptures on the WKU campus and famous sculptors like Henry Moore, Dale Chihuly, and Elizabeth Berrien. Campers were encouraged to keep their artwork and display it at home.
