Evelyn Thurman Award to Author Albert A. Bell, Jr.

Author Albert A. Bell, Jr.The Evelyn Thurman Young Readers Book Award was given to Albert A. Bell, Jr., author of “The Secret of the Lonely Grave,” on February 16 in Kentucky Building.

Apart from the award committee members Sean Kinder, Deana Groves, and Tracy Harkins, the Dean of the Libraries and the department heads were also present at the luncheon. Professor Julia Roberts, Director of the Center for Gifted Studies and Everlyn Thurman’s relatives and friends were among the attendees.

The Award is given to honor the memory of former WKU librarian, Evelyn Thurman, who made significant contributions to children’s librarianship and literacy during her 25 years of service. The biography will help you learn more about Evelyn and her contributions.

Area school children make scrapbook of Bowling Green history

school children look at historic photographsOn the afternoon of February 8, seventeen third graders from St. Joseph’s School in Bowling Green visited the Kentucky Library & Museum to search though our approximately 12,000 photographs. Their mission included looking for pictures of “jobs, transportation, schools and churches” that they could use in preparing a “scrapbook” of pictures depicting the history of Bowling Green.

Kentucky Live!: Healing Kentucky

Nancy BairdIn support of her recent book, Nancy Baird, Kentucky History Specialist at the Kentucky Library and Museum, presented “Healing Kentucky” on February 14 at Barnes & Noble. This program is part of the “Kentucky Live!” series of programs organized by the WKU Libraries.

Healing Kentucky looked at 200 years of progress in medicine and health care in the Commonwealth–from Ephraim McDowell, who performed abdominal surgery on his kitchen table, to a couple of University of Louisville surgeons, who transplanted an artificial heart into the chest of a Logan County man.

The Writer-in-Residence Series

Diana McQuadyPresented by Diana McQuady, the 2007-2008 Western Kentucky University Libraries’ Writer-in-Residence, this workshop was designed to set potential writers on the journey of finding their writing voice, getting words on paper, and moving forward from there. This session was presented on WKU’s Glasgow Campus on Thursday, February 7 and at Bowling Green Community College (WKU’s South Campus) on Thursday, February 14.

Diana has been co-chair of the Southern Kentucky Book Fest’s annual Kentucky Writers Conference for the past five years. Her writing has appeared in various newspapers, newsletters, and anthologies and has been recognized with awards from such sources as the Writer’s Digest Annual Competition and the Tennessee Writers Alliance Short Fiction Award. She recently received artist grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Kentucky Arts Council. When not at a WKU basketball game, Diana is at work on her third novel. A native Kentuckian, she divides her time between Bowling Green and Nashville.

Macy’s Used Book Sale a Great Success

Macy's Used Book Sale volunteers at workOn February 8-10, the Southern Kentucky Book Fest Partners held its annual used book sale at Bowling Green’s Historic L&N Depot. The even was sponsored by Macy’s, and the proceeds benefit the 2008 Southern Kentucky Book Fest. The Southern Kentucky Book Fest Partners include WKU Libraries, Bowling Green Public Library and Barnes & Noble Booksellers. The Macy’s Used Book Sale was a great success thanks to those who volunteered at the event.

First African American Read-In at Jave City in Helm Library

Mike Binder, Dean of WKU LibrariesWKU Libraries held its first annual African American Read-In program on the afternoon of Feburuary 4, 2008 at Java City in Helm Library. Presiding over the event was Cindy Troutman, Libraries’ Marketing Coordinator. Students, faculty and staff read their favorite piece of African-American literature, prose and poetry alike. Among the readers were Mike Binder, Dean of WKU Libraries; Lou-Ann Crouther, English Department professor; Gay Perkins, WKU Libraries’ professor; Kristi Branham, Women’s Studies instructor; and Diana McQuady, WKU Libraries’ Writer-in-Residence.

The Read-In is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to come together and celebrate the works of African-American writers. It has been endorsed by the International Reading Association. Over a million readers of all ethnic groups from forty-nine states, the West Indies, and African countries have participated. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities at WKU.

Clay Workshops Held

student at Clay workshopIn January national award winning ceramicist Davie Reneau led two hand-building clay workshops for adults at the Kentucky Library & Museum. The participants spent two Saturday mornings learning hand-building techniques including pinch pots, coil, and slab work.

Young Artists Display Work at Kentucky Library & Museum

young artistsThe Side by Side 2008 exhibit opening on Sunday, January 27 drew a large crowd to the Kentucky Library & Museum. This exhibit is a collaboration between VSA arts and the Kentucky Library & Museum. In attendance were the student artists, their families, and the professional artists who volunteered their time.
