Kentucky Live! It’s All About the Cheese!

Kenny and Beverly Mattingly told their story of cheese making as one of the WKU Libraries' Kentucky Live talk series.WKU Libraries’ Kentucky Live featured Kenny and Beverly Mattingly on the evening of November 11, 2010 at Barnes & Noble, Bowling Green, KY. Kenny, owner of the Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese, told us the story of his family tradition and allowed us to sample some of the sumptuous cheeses he and his wife brought. If you missed the cheese, you can still listen to his talk and view the pictures of the event.

Temporary Closing of Cravens Library

Cravens Library will close at 5:00 pm Thursday, Nov. 4, and reopen at 7:00 pm due to a cellular equipment helicopter airlift to the top of that building.  All pedestrian traffic will be prohibited around Cravens during that time and the street closures adjacent to the building will be extended temporarily in both directions.  Helm Library will remain open during this event, but the Helm/IEB parking lot may be closed temporarily.

WKU Libraries on the Cover of C&RL News

College & Research Llibraries News cover

granville1We’re pleased to announce that a painting by Granville Mitchell from the Kentucky African American Art Collection in the Raymond Cravens Library is featured on the front cover of the nation’s leading college and university libraries trade journal. With more than 12,000 personal and institutional subscribers and an international readership many times that number, College & Research Libraries News showcases the work of the Association of College and Research Libraries and its member institutions. Mitchell, who studied commercial art at WKU, works on paper with pen and ink, acrylic, oil, and some airbrush. In his works he seeks to capture movement, the dynamic of life.

“Main Street” is one of two Granville Mitchell paintings in our collection.

Mitchell’s art was showcased in Kentucky Live! Southern Culture At Its Best, an annual series of public talks sponsored by the WKU Libraries, now in its eighth season. He also depicted the Historic Freedom Riders in a collaborative mural honoring the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at the Kentucky Library and Museum.

This marks the third time WKU Libraries has been featured on the front cover of C&RL News.

“Set the Night on Fire” – Art by Tom Poole

"Set the Night on Fire" by Tom Poole

One of the most popular recent art additions in the Helm-Cravens Library is “Set the Night on Fire,” a tribute to Jim Morrison of the rock group, The Doors. Born James Douglas Morrison in Melbourne, Florida in 1943, Morrison was a singer-composer-poet whose band became an icon of the late 1960s with hits like “Light My Fire” which in 1967 became the number one song of the “summer of love.” After completing his seventh album, a documentary film, three collections of poetry and a screenplay Morrison was discovered dead in his Paris apartment on July 4, 1971. He’s buried at Paris’s Pere Lachaise cemetery near the graves of Moliere, Balzac, Edith Piaf, Chopin and Oscar Wilde. See Jerry Hopkins entry in American National Biography Online, a WKU e-book.

Poole is an award winning Kentucky artist who paints with watercolors, acrylics, oils, pastels and mixed media. His work has appeared in many state, regional and national exhibitions. He’s a signature member of the Louisiana and Kentucky Watercolor Societies and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. Tom was a huge fan of The Doors and Jim and viewed his death at 27 as a great tragedy. His poem below is used with permission:

Portraits of Joseph W. Hawkins and George Ann Nicholas Hawkins are featured in a newly published biography, “Marie Prescott: A Star of Some Brilliancy” by Kevin Lane Dearinger.

The book explores the family roots, life and career of this native of Paris, Kentucky, including an ancestor, Joseph W. Hawkins, who was influential in the founding of the state of Texas. Prescott led a somewhat unconventional and often notorious life that included directing and starring in Oscar Wilde’s first play,”Vera, or the Nihilists.”After cataloging, the book will be available in the Harrison-Baird Reading Room of the Kentucky Library & Museum.
