Matt BogardAfter almost 4 years with WKU Libraries as Facilities Specialist for DLPS, Matt Bogard will be leaving us April 6th to take a Market Research position with Enrollment Management in Academic Affairs.

While we will miss Matt and greatly appreciate his outstanding work, we want to wish him the best of success in his new position.

University Libraries Faculty Award Winners

Connie Foster and Haiwang Yuan, winners of faculty awardsWestern Kentucky University annually recognizes outstanding contributions by faculty members in the areas of Teaching, Research/Creativity, Public Service, and Student Advisement.

From University Libraries, Connie Foster, Head of Department of Library Technology Services, and Haiwang Yuan, Web Site & Virtual Library Coordinator, won the college-level awards for Public Services and Research/Creativity respectively. They are also the finalists for the university-wide awards.

A number of their colleagues went to their reception at the Student Success Center in DUC to congratulate them.

A Reminder: US Bank Art Exhibit Still Going On

The 2008 US Bank Art Exhibition is going on now through April 5 at The Kentucky Library & Museum.

See over 400 pieces in a variety of mediums, each created by a Kentucky artist! Many of the pieces on display are for sale. A portion of the proceeds from sales benefit the Kentucky Library & Museum, and scholarships within the WKU Art Department.

Museum hours: 9am-4pm Monday through Saturday 1pm-4pm Sunday.

Admission is free to WKU faculty, staff and students with ID!

Far Away Places: Easter Island

Dr. Michael TrapassoDr. Michael Trapasso, professor in the Geography and Geology Department at WKU, talked about Easter Island in the University Libraries’ Faraway Places Series on Thursday, March 20th at Barnes & Noble.

Easter Island has long been known as an Island of Mystery. In reality, scientists have studied this island and its inhabitants for decades and much of the mystery has been cleared away. If you missed out and are interested in learning about the truth behind the mysteries, the following will help you revisit Dr. Trapasso’s talk.

ERC Invites You to Its Book Exhibit

Book CoversThe WKU community is invited to the book exhibit “Children Between Worlds: Intercultural Relations in Books for Children & Young Adults.” in Educational Resources Center (ERC), 366 Tate Page Hall.

Events are scheduled for Wednesdays 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. on the following days:

  • March 19: Readings from selected titles
  • March 26: Dr. Tadayuki Suzuki, multicultural children’s literature from Japan
  • April 2: Dr. Lucy Maples, international Cinderella tales
  • April 9: Laura Crafton & Stephanie Tillery: Join us in making an international craft!
  • April 16: Readers’ Theater featuring WKU Theater majors

Please bring your students to view this unique exhibit representing many cultures around the world!

You can also visit the exhibit at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest Saturday, April 19. Then the exhibit will move to the new Bob Kirby branch of the Bowling Green Public Library until mid-May.

Band Celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at Java City

ShadowdancerOn March 17, 2008 at Java City in Helm Library, Shadowdancer entertained the faculty and students with songs from their latest CD “Tradition with a Twist.” The band consists one of our own, Jack Montgomery and WKU faculty members.
