Goldia McKeel Dunn Curd Photograph Album

Fisher Boarding HouseGoldia McKeel Dunn Curd attended WKU between 1920 and 1924. During her time in Bowling Green, she lived at the Fisher boarding house and kept a photograph album. The album has been digitized and is now available online at: http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/stu_alum_papers/26.  The album includes photographs of WKU faculty and students, Fountain Square Park as well as students in Russell Springs High School where Curd eventually taught school.

The photograph at left includes Gertrude P? Mamye Bagwell, Mr. Fisher, Earl Sherman, Reba B? Gladie Payne, Goldia Dunn, Jessie Sherman, Mrs. Fisher, Celia Hart and James Alvin.

This is a photograph of Lost River Cave during a flood.  The Jenny Lind boat had been secured to the roof and you can see how high the water is.

Kate Matthews and “The Little Colonel”

Photographer Kate Seston Matthews (1870-1956) was born in New Albany, Indiana, but she lived most of her life in rural Pewee Valley, Kentucky, a small community near Louisville. Matthews used this community and her friends and family as her subjects, but she is most well known today for her photographs depicting characters in the children’s book series, The Little Colonel. These stories were written by her neighbor, Annie Fellows Johnston. Matthews also loved to pose living pictures or tableaux vivants, whereby she captured on film a “water colored” view of her community and life in rural Kentucky. A patron has donated some of these original model prints depicting characters from the series to the Kentucky Library’s Photographic Archives. These materials are available for research Monday through Saturday (9-4) and may also be viewed at our online catalog, KenCAT.Little Colonel Series Models

Juanita Hood Stockton Scrapbooks

Juanita Hood Stockton, class of 1954, attended WKU between 1950 and 1954.  During her time here she created two scrapbooks which were donated to University Archives.  In late 2009 the scrapbooks consisting mainly of photographs were scanned and then taken apart in order to better preserve the images.  Ms. Stockton included images of herself and friends such as Rosemary Scholl, Reed Johnson, Barbara Marsh and Nancy Slocum.  There are images of couples preparing for Military Balls, Valentine’s Day dances, Beech Bend Park, Fountain Square Park, Hilltoppers Lunch, the Senators Club and in the dorms. 

This week pdf files of those scrapbooks have been made available through TopScholar: http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/stu_alum_papers/.  Individual images which have yet to be identified are also available through KenCat – search using Juanita Hood Stockton.  Check out these sources to see a slice of campus life from the early 1950’s and help us identify some people.

Clara Ramsey DeWilde Scrapbook

 

Clara Ramsey DeWildeClara Ramsey DeWilde was a pretty typical WKU student in 1945.  Born in Russellville, Kentucky in 1926, she was 19 when she came to Bowling Green.  She lived in West Hall and created a scrapbook of photographs of her time on the Hill.  These include friends on campus, Halloween in the dorm, a trip to Mammoth Cave and family.

This scrapbook was loaned to University Archives for digitization in 2007.  It is now available to researchers via KenCat by searching DeWilde [http://wku.pastperfect-online.com/35749cgi/mweb.exe?request=ks].  This is only one of many examples of Student/Alumni personal papers found in the University Archives.

Behind the Scenes – Photograph Collection

WKU is very fortunate to have a great run of photographs dating from 1906. There are currently three students creating an inventory of the collection. As they go through the filing cabinets of photos collecting data, the university archivist reviews their work, categorizes the images based on twelve series (photo collection) and enters the data into our “Past Perfect” database.

Many of the images are very well described, listing the people, places or events they depict. However, there are a number of images that do not have any or incomplete descriptions. The students do research in the Talisman and other sources to more fully describe the images. The photos that remain unidentified will be scanned and posted online so the public can help us identify them.

We also scan images on demand for researchers. This is a service we provide free for students and faculty and for a fee to those outside the university. The images that are being scanned are being described as fully as possible in Past Perfect. The goal is to mount the descriptions and images online using Past Perfect.
