Party Honoring Graduating Student Workers

Libraries' party to honor graduating student workersOn the morning of December 10, 2008, the Dean’s Office of WKU Libraries held a party for graduating student workers. They were Candace Rogers from the Dean’s Office, Crystal Bowling from the Library Technical Services, and Josten Wilson, Charity Gore, and Heather Huber from the Library Public Services (DLPS). Dean Mike Binder greeted the students, and Head of DLPS Brian Coutts commented on the great service these students did to the Libraries. Food brought in by faculty and staff was served at the party.

Doris Retires After 40 Years of Service

Doris Hardcastle with Dean Mike Binder at Her Retirement ReceptionBibliographic Access of the Department of Library Technical Services (DLTS) at WKU gave a retirement reception on December 9, 2008 in the DLTS Break Room in honor of Doris Hardcastle’s 40 years of service to the Department and University Libraries. Dean Mike Binder, Department Head Connie Foster and Bibliographic Access Coordinator Rose Davis gave their laudatory comments on Doris’ loyal and diligent service. At the end of the reception, colleagues presented her with gifts and cards of good wishes.

Musicans Performed at Java City in Helm Library

Tommy JohnsonThis week, WKU Libraries presented several singers at Java City, the coffee house of Helm Library. One of them was Tommy Johnson along with his band, the Song Farmers performed their unique brand of American roots music to an enthusiastic, cheering crowd on Wednesday. Tommy, a native of Franklin, KY is internationally acclaimed as a songwriter and performer. We hope to have them return next Fall for another engagement.

Lauren ConkinThe other was Louisville Singer/songwriter and WKU sophomore Lauren Conkin performed to an appreciative crowd at Java City. Her performance drew comments including “She’s really good, bring her back!” and “She’s a diamond in the rough.”

Evelyn Thurman Award Presented to John Adams

Dean Binder Presenting Evelyn Thurman Young Readers Award to John AdamsOn November 21, on behalf of WKU Libraries and the Southern Kentucky Book Fest Partners, Dean of Libraries Mike Binder presented the Evelyn Thurman Young Readers Book Award to John Adams and Barbara L. Gibson, the author and illustrator of The Dragon Fly Door during a luncheon at The Kentucky Library and Museum.

Prior to the luncheon and the award ceremony, the author John Adams visited Bowling Green schools and signed and donated books for the children.

WKU Libraries Hosted Smithsonian Curator on Robots in Space

Roger LauniusDr. Roger D. Launius, Curator of the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian, spoke for Western Kentucky University Libraries’ Far Away Places series, on Thursday, November 20th at Barnes & Noble.

Dr. Launius is considered one of the nation’s most prominent space historians and has authored or edited more than 25 books. His latest book, Robots in Space: Technology, Evolution and Interplanetary Travel, published by Johns Hopkins University Press, was the topic of discussion. In the book, Lanius and co-author Howard McCurdy of American University address the issue of how to best explore space: with humans or robots.

This event had more than eighty attendees, mostly WKU faculty and students, with some coming from the Bowling Green community.

Anne MacFie Performed at Java City in Helm Library

Anne MacFieInternationally recognized singer/songwriter Anne MacFie of Stanton, KY delighted the audience today with her original songs and stories. A consummate performer, Ms MacFie will certainly be asked back to Java City for a repeat performance.

Faraway Places Presented Dr. David Keeling on Russia

Dr. David KeelingOn the morning of November 19, WKU Libraries’ “Faraway Places” program presented Dr. David Keeling, Head of Department of Geology and Geography, WKU, in Helm Library 100. He talked about the geoethnic and geopolitical issues of Russia to an audience of faculty, staff and students. This is part of the International Education Week events sponsored by the WKU Office of International Programs.

International Education Week Presented Librarian

Prof. Yuan giving his presentation to students from Russellville in Helm LibraryThe International Education Week sponsored by the WKU Office of International Programs and hosted by WKU Libraries presented Prof. Haiwang Yuan, Web Coordinator of the Libraries and author of Chinese folktales. He gave a presentation first to the library faculty and staff and then a group of middle school students from Russellville, Kentucky.

The presentation was about China’s ethnic diversity and contrasting lives of Chinese. At the end of his conversation, he gave out his book Princess Peacock: Tales from the Other Peoples of China (Libraries Unlimited, 2008) that he signed to the winner of a door prize. Then Garry and Doug took the students on a library tour.
