Fifteen basket making enthusiasts spent Saturday, Feb. 7th making an Egg Basket at the Kentucky Library & Museum. Using traditional oak hoops, they learned how to weave a Kentucky style “eye”to lash the hoops together under the watchful eye of instructor Beth Hester and her side-kick Scott Gilbert. Everyone took away a new treasure and a sense of admiration for all basket makers.

Tie Yourself Up in a Workshop
Does your wardrobe need that special accessory? Did you ever want to learn how to tie dye? The Kentucky Library & Museum is offering a Tie-Dye Workshop on April 4 from 10 am to 12 noon. Artist Laura McGee will teach you how to use Procion-H dyes to tie-dye a 14 72 inch silk-rayon velvet scarf. Choose brilliant or muted color combinations. In any case, the effect is luxurious! You will take home your creation the same day.

A Tisket a Tasket … Learn How to Make a Basket
Looking for an activity to chase away the winter blahs? Learn how to make a traditional Kentucky-style “eye†and rib construction basket from noted basketmaker Beth Hester. This 10 inch melon-shaped egg basket is easy to make and recommended for novice basket makers. This is a great beginner level basket.
This workshop is scheduled for February 7, 2009 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Pre-registration is required.

Spring Break Art Camp at Kentucky Museum
Looking for a spring break activity for your child. Enroll him or her in the Kentucky Library & Museum Spring Break Art Camp. Designed for children in grades 1 to 6, this weeklong activity runs from March 16 – 20 from 8 am until 12 noon and after camp care is available until 4 pm.
Campers will enjoy a variety of art activities, which include painting with acrylic and watercolors, block printing, foam core sculpture. Campers will tour Kentucky Museum exhibits including Side by Side 2009 and the US Bank “Celebration of the Arts” Open Art Exhibition, the largest art exhibit in this area. They will also, if weather permits, tour the Western Kentucky University campus to view newly installed sculpture.

Young Artists
Young artists, their collaborating professional partners, and friends and family turned out on Sunday, January 18th for the opening of the “Bowling Green Side by Side: VSA arts of Kentucky” exhibit. Featuring more than 60 works, the exhibit runs through March 31.

“Christmas in Kentucky” Activities at KY Museum
On December 6, 2008, about a thousand attendees including children of different ages participated in the free, fun-filled family activities throughout the Kentucky Museum featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus, Big Red, ornament making, Christmas carolers, dramatic performances and much more. This year’s theme was the “Civil War in Kentucky!” Light refreshments were provided free.

Mischief at the Kentucky Library & Museum
In November, several hundred area school children learned about the world’s three greatest tricksters and about theater and theatrical vocabulary, as well as African, Native American, and European cultures. The play, The Mischief Makers, was performed by students from the Western Kentucky University Theater Department.

Art Going On…
Several fantastic area children participated in Fall Break Arts Camp the week of October 13-17. Led by Kentucky Library & Museum Artist-in-Residence Lynne Ferguson, participants marbled paper, wove their own baskets, painted gourds and became printmakers.

Abraham Lincoln’s Visited Kentucky Library & Museum
At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2008, Kentucky Chatautauqua presented Jim Sayre as Abraham Lincoln “I, too, am a Kentuckian.â€
Mr. Sayre’s Lincoln presentation was part of a grant funded teacher workshop hosted by the Kentucky Library & Museum. The public was encouraged to attend this portion of the workshop.

What’s It Worth?
On Saturday, April 16, antique lovers from around South Central Kentucky participated in an Appraisal Day at the Kentucky Library & Museum. Appraisers were on hand to tell them something about their family heirlooms and give them an idea of the value of their treasures.
