WKU Libraries’ announcement of coming events and new collections.

Renovations are underway at Cravens Library

cravens_construction_insets_finConstruction workers are making great improvements to the rooftop area of Cravens Library. Work began May 13 to fix the wall around the roof and the roof. To ensure a safe environment, the exterior of the building has been fenced off to patrons; however, the building is open and accessible through the ground and 4th floor entrances as well as the Helm Java City entrance. All entrances are expected to be open at the beginning of the Fall semester in August.

According to Daniel Peach, Library Facilities Coordinator, the renovation was definitely needed. “The roof has been in disrepair for some time now, most recently leading to massive leaking on the 7th, 8th, and 9th floors of Cravens,” said Peach.

The roof repairs are scheduled to continue through October 11, but will not limit access to the building in any way.

Natural Standard at WKU Libraries

NaturalStandard_Banner

New! Natural Standard integrative medicine database is now available through WKU Libraries. Natural Standard lets you find comprehensive, evidence-based, peer-reviewed information on foods, herbs, supplements and natural therapies. Sections include color photographs, history, dosage, interactions, adverse effects, allergies, efficacy, pregnancy/lactation data and mechanism of action. Available evidence is collected from a variety of scholarly sources, summarized, and graded.  Patient handouts in English & Spanish & CE/CME programs included.

Natural Standard was founded by clinicians from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and University of California in response to widespread use of complementary and alternative therapies and lack of reliable sources of information.  Monographs undergo blinded review by clinical and research faculty at academic medical centers.

Natural Standard is available on or off campus. You can find it in the Databases list on the Library website, or through the TOPCAT online catalog.

ERC Print-Release Station

ERC Print-Release Station

The New ERC Print-Release Station

The Educational Resources Center (ERC) has just received a new print-release station for its six public computers. Students use their print allocation, deducted from their WKU IDs to print. In previous years, the ERC had an older laser printer that finally bit the dust just after the Fall 2012 semester began. Print capabilities are a popular service for students, and thanks are due to Interim Libraries’ Dean Connie Foster, Library Public Services Head Dr. Brian Coutts, and Director of Academic Technology Dr. John Bowers and IT/AT teams for their quick installation of the new set-up.

KY Live! with Morgan Atkinson

Wonder: The Lives of Anna and Harlan Hubbard

Anna and Harlan Hubbard led their lives as few people in modern times have – representing the pioneers of sustainability. Living in a house they built, sustained by food they raised or caught, supported by no electricity, the Hubbards, found their way without modern conveniences.

Morgan Atkinson, writer and producer of Wonder, lives in Louisville, KY, and has been recognized for his work documenting the philosopher/monk Thomas Merton, the writer/social activist John Howard Griffen and many more in the 25 years of his career.

This presentation by Mr. Atkinson will be a 20 minute preview of the new film Wonder first premiering in November.  The narrative and art is from the Hubbard’s journals, and will be accompanied by excerpts from Wendell Berry’s book on their lives.  Will Oldham and Katie Weible will be the voices of Harlan and Anna.  Soundtrack by: Ray Lamontagne.

Please join us September 27th, 7:00pm at the Kentucky Building for this event. This will be a swipeable event.
