Evelyn Thurman Award to Author Albert A. Bell, Jr.

Author Albert A. Bell, Jr.The Evelyn Thurman Young Readers Book Award was given to Albert A. Bell, Jr., author of “The Secret of the Lonely Grave,” on February 16 in Kentucky Building.

Apart from the award committee members Sean Kinder, Deana Groves, and Tracy Harkins, the Dean of the Libraries and the department heads were also present at the luncheon. Professor Julia Roberts, Director of the Center for Gifted Studies and Everlyn Thurman’s relatives and friends were among the attendees.

The Award is given to honor the memory of former WKU librarian, Evelyn Thurman, who made significant contributions to children’s librarianship and literacy during her 25 years of service. The biography will help you learn more about Evelyn and her contributions.

Kentucky Live!: Healing Kentucky

Nancy BairdIn support of her recent book, Nancy Baird, Kentucky History Specialist at the Kentucky Library and Museum, presented “Healing Kentucky” on February 14 at Barnes & Noble. This program is part of the “Kentucky Live!” series of programs organized by the WKU Libraries.

Healing Kentucky looked at 200 years of progress in medicine and health care in the Commonwealth–from Ephraim McDowell, who performed abdominal surgery on his kitchen table, to a couple of University of Louisville surgeons, who transplanted an artificial heart into the chest of a Logan County man.

Uma Doraiswamy gave a lecture on South IndiaUma Doraiswamy, WKU’s Social Sciences Catalog Librarian, talked about South India in this week’s Faraway Places Series on Thursday, October 18th at Barnes & Noble. Southern India comprises the four states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in addition to the two Union Territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry, whose inhabitants are collectively referred to as Southern Indians. Kentucky Live!: Lincoln the Lawyer

Lincoln the Lawyer 1On Thursday October 11, 2007 at 7:00 pm, the Kentucky Live! program, organized by the WKU Libraries, presented “Lincoln the Lawyer” by Anderson University professor Brian Dirck at Barnes & Noble Booksellers.

“A lot of people forget that Lincoln was a lawyer, and a very good one,” Dirck points out, “in fact, he is the most experienced trial attorney we ever put in the White House.” Despite historians’ focus on the man as president and politician, Abraham Lincoln lived most of his adult life as a practicing lawyer. It was as a lawyer that he fed his family, made his reputation, bonded with Illinois, and began his political career.

Lawyering was also how Lincoln learned to become an expert mediator between angry antagonists, as he applied his knowledge of the law and of human nature to settle one dispute after another. Frontier lawyers worked hard to establish respect for the law and encourage people to resolve their differences without intimidation or violence. These were the very skills Lincoln used so deftly to hold a crumbling nation together during his presidency.

William Woys Weaver Presented American Appetite

William Woys Weaver at the Kentucky Museum.On Friday, September 28 at the Kentucky Library & Museum, internationally known food historian, author and “seed saver” of heirloom vegetables, William Woys Weaver, presented “An American Appetite: The Material Culture of Food.”

Weaver has authored fourteen books, on topics such as heirloom vegetables, herbal remedies, gardening and cooking. He currently serves as Contributing Editor to Gourmet, and Contributing Editor to Mother Earth News. “An American Appetite” explores the trends and ideas in the development of American cuisine over the past three centuries using archival material, old menus, and culinary ephemera to illustrate ways we can better understand where we have come from and where we are headed.

Far Away Places: the Sahara

David Keeling, Head of Geography and Geology, talked about the Sahara in this week’s Far Away Places Series on Thursday, September 20th at Barnes & Noble.

Keeling traveled to the Sahara last October and November as Expedition Lecturer for the American Geographical Society’s educational expedition programs.

Kentucky Live!: Floral Design in Kentucky & Abroad

Roger Dennis at WKU Libraries' Kentucky Live! programOn Thursday September 13, 2007 at 7:00 pm, Kentucky Live! program, organized by the WKU Libraries presented WKU horticulture and floral-design instructor Roger Dennis at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. This event is free.

Dennis was a floral designer for the 79th Annual Academy Awards and a designer for floats at the Rose Bowl. He also designed a flower arrangement for inauguration of George W. Bush in 2005. He has been teaching at WKU for six years, and in that time has seen interest in floral design classes grow.

Nancy Baird Is Recipient of Sara Tyler Award

Nancy Baird Receives Sara Tyler AwardKentucky History Specialist, Prof. Nancy Baird is the recipient of the Sara Tyler Merit Award. A reception was given in her honor at the Kentucky Building on May 3, 2007. At the reception were her family members and colleagues in the University Libraries and on campus.

Library Media Education Professor Robert Smith presided over the event and gave his opening remark, Dean of Libraries Mike Binder presented the award to Nancy, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Richard Miller spoke on behalf of Provost Barbara Burch, Head of Library Special Collections Timothy Mullin presented a scrapbook and a gift to Nancy, and Libraries Special Projects Coordinator Peggy Wright, a long-time friend of Nancy, told the audience what she knew about her.

Sara TylerEstablished by colleagues of Miss Sara Elizabeth Tyler following her retirement in 1975, this award is a tribute to her 42 years of service to Western Kentucky University as a teacher, Director of Library Services, and University Archivist. The award is given to a member of the faculty for outstanding dedicated service in the field of librarianship.

Faraway Places Presents Israel

WKU Philosophy and Religion Professor Shannon Schaffer gave a lecture on Israel at Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Campbell Lane, Bowling Green, KY on the evening of April 12, 2007. This lecture is part of the Faraway Places international lecture series sponsored by the WKU Libraries. Nearly sixty attendees were present. They include WKU faculty and students as well as Bowling Green community members.
