November 10, 2015 Sue Lynn McDaniel from Library Special Collections gave a good argument about genealogical research and its academic relevance. Her research journey for both her own family and her husband’s illustrated how significant history is when searching for an individual’s heritage. McDaniel gave intriguing stories about the distances she drove and the discoveries she found after in-depth steps were taken to find family details. Her talk’s title “Cow Pastures, Courthouses, and Funeral Home Visitations: Searching for Lost Loved Ones” describes the lengths she took to fit the puzzle pieces together.

WKU Libraries helped spread the Homecoming Spirit in front of Cravens Library with a circus-themed photo booth, Big Red, Wally the White Squirrel and free popcorn and candy. More than 100 students stopped by to join in the fun and take pictures with their own phones. WKU Libraries encouraged student to snap, post, and tweet their photos to spread the spirit by posting or using the hashtag “WKULibraryCircus.”

“Behind the Scenes” tour of the Educational Resources Center
Library faculty and staff took a “Behind the Scenes” tour of the Educational Resources Center (ERC) October 28 to learn more about the materials, patrons, and resources available for use. Ellen Micheletti, longtime staff member of the ERC staff, escorted the group, offering interesting information and tidbits about the ERC.
WKU Libraries honored Dr. Lyons and Anne Epperson for open access accomplishments
Dr. Scott Lyons, Associate Professor and Director for School of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport and WKU alum Ann Epperson were honored on October 22 at a reception in Helm Library as the inaugural inductees into WKU Libraries Open Access Hall of Fame.
Lyons is the founder and editor of the International Journal of Exercise Science (IJES) which debuted on TopSCHOLAR®, the research and creative activity database of WKU, in 2007 with over 345,000 downloads to date.
Epperson was honored in the student category for her thesis Internet GIS as a Historic Place-Making Tool for Mammoth Cave National Park which has been downloaded nearly 15,000 times.

Italian horror film “Suspiria” filled the Faculty House
Students filled the Faculty House last Friday, October 16 eager to see the cult classic Italian horror film “Suspiria” that was in its original 1977 form. Italian film expert Elizabeth Aslop from the English Department introduced the film and led a lively discussion at the end of the viewing. More than 40 students, faculty, and staff enjoyed complimentary food highlighting Italy with meatballs and bruschetta along with dessert options. Door prizes were given at the end of the night featuring a book and two Italian themed baskets of food, coffee, and treats. The next film and last one of the semester features Brazil with The Way He Looks on November 20.

Lyons and Epperson honored for inaugural WKU Libraries Open Access Hall of Fame
Dr. Scott Lyons and Ann Epperson are the inaugural inductees into the WKU Libraries Open Access Hall of Fame. “We want to acknowledge both faculty and students who have enhanced the works in TopSCHOLAR®, the Research and Creative Activity Database of WKU,” said Deana Groves, Department Head of Library Technical Services at WKU. “Dr. Lyons’ and Ann Epperson’s scholarly achievements have drawn thousands of researchers from around the world with downloads through this quality open access platform.”
Dr. Scott Lyons, director of WKU School of Kinesiology, Recreation, & Sport, has exemplified the spirit of Open Access through his founding and editorship of the International Journal of Exercise Science (IJES), which debuted on TopSCHOLAR® in 2007. With over 345,000 downloads, this quarterly journal is dedicated to the dissemination of undergraduate and graduate research in the areas of Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Human Performance, Kinesiology, and related disciplines. It benefits not only WKU student researchers by providing a peer-reviewed journal, but is discoverable globally through the TopSCHOLAR® platform. Dr. Lyons completed his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alabama in 2003 and joined the faculty of WKU in 2004.
Ann Epperson is being honored in the Student Research category for her thesis Internet GIS as a Historic Place-Making Tool for Mammoth Cave National Park. Her advisors were Dr. Katie Algeo, Dr. Jun Yan, Dr. Fred Siewers and Dr. Kevin Cary. This project laid the groundwork for an Internet-delivered Public Participation Geographic Information System to facilitate exploration and discovery of the past communities of the Mammoth Cave Park area. Epperson’s thesis was completed in fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Science degree in Geography and Geology in December 2010. It has been downloaded nearly 15,000 times since it was posted to TopSCHOLAR®.

WKU Libraries partners to highlight International Literacy Day

Western Kentucky Reading Council, and the College of Educational and Behavioral Sciences partnered to celebrate International Literacy Day on Thursday, September 17 from 3-4:30pm. WKU students, faculty, and staff gave short stories, legends, myths, and true events of various international perspectives, including Library Professor H
aiwang Yuan and ERC Coordinator and library faculty member Roxanne Spencer. Dr. Margaret Gichuru ended the afternoon talking to a large group of students about South Africa and the literacy efforts being made there.

Faraway Flix International Film Series opened with South African Film “Tsotsi”
The Faraway Flix International Film Series kicked off its year with the South African film “Tsotsi” at the Faculty House on Friday, September 18. Forty faculty, staff, and students attended the event, with a spread of specialized food highlighting the featured country of the month. Amy Hoffman, International Admissions Officer, and Dr. Saundra Ardrey, Politcial Science, talked about South Africa and led discussion after the film was over. The event was made possible with support from the International Student Office, Student Activities, Office of International Programs, WellU, and WKU Libraries.
