Hilltoppers in University Archives

Varsity Lettermen 1959

Varsity Lettermen 1959

WKU athletic records and photographs are a hot item in University Archives.  We answer many questions related to coaching staff, student athletes and teams throughout the year.  In order to facilitate research several series of records have been processed and detailed finding aids made available online.  These include two sets of photographs:

Digitized images are available through KenCat (http://wku.pastperfect-online.com/35749cgi/mweb.exe?request=ks).

Several athletic department office records have been processed.

These last records are especially useful to anyone interested in the Hilltoppers as they consist of Media Guides for every major sport(http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/dlsc_ua_fin_aid/55/), Student Biographical File 1979-2004 (http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/dlsc_ua_fin_aid/54/) and Clipping File 1962-present (http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/dlsc_ua_fin_aid/53/).

We are currently processing the Basketball Office records which consist of correspondence regarding schedules, tournaments and athletes and hope to have a finding aid posted in the near future.

The University Archives also houses an extensive film, video and audio collection, the bulk of which is made up of athletic film.  The master list is available online at: http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/dlsc_ua_fin_aid/198/

If you have Hilltopper documents, photographs or memorabilia that don’t appear in the finding aids, please contact the University Archives at 270-745-4793 or via email at archives@wku.edu

Students Enjoyed “Night at the Museum”

MasterPlan students practiced writing in cursive style with feather pens.On the evening of August 26, 2009, M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan students had a good time in the Kentucky Museum at an event dubbed as “Night at the Museum,” a marketing effort to bring more students into the facility and familiarize them with the exhibits. Attendees had a chance to take a photo with “Lincoln” and his “wife,” and had a taste of the life lived by their ancestors in the Civil War period, such as wearing the girdle, writing in cursive styles with feather pens, and reenacting the war with figurines. These photos will show you how much they enjoyed the night at the Kentucky Museum.

“Snacks in the Stacks” Brought Students to Main Library

Students playing cards in Helm Library during the On the evening of August 25, 2009, WKU Libraries launched its creative marketing event dubbed as “Snacks in the Stacks.” Food, music, and Las Vagas-style pokers brought in numerous MasterPlan students to the Helm-Cravens Library. Players who got the right line-up of the cards won different kinds of prizes, ranging from T-shirts and pizzas to iTune gift cards and iPod devices.

Marketing Coordinator Jennifer Wilson was the mastermind of the event, which was facilitated by several of the Libraries faculty and staff from the Access and Reference units. The Dean of Libraries and department heads were all at the event–an event that Provost Burch described as “impressive” when she learned of it.

Reynolds Photograph Collection

Early in the twentieth century, William R. Reynolds, Jr. (1878-1955), Cave City’s photographer, produced a series of photographs documenting life in this small southcentral Kentucky town.  His work, carefully reproduced from glass plate negatives, has been on exhibit at the Kentucky Library & Museum since June 1.  Supported with extensive research by Reynolds’ grandchildren, Dale and Kate Covington, their family and friends, and staff of the Kentucky Library & Museum, the photographs provide a fascinating glimpse at the people, homes, businesses and activities of Cave City, a town of 645 in 1910.  Dale and Kate Covington have now made a generous donation to the Kentucky Library & Museum, which will allow staff to plan a smaller traveling exhibit of the photographs for viewing in Cave City and Glasgow.

Hurry!  You have only until August 30 to view the Kentucky Library & Museum’s photograph exhibit, “Portrait of a Town: Cave City, Kentucky.”
