The New ERC Print-Release Station
The Educational Resources Center (ERC) has just received a new print-release station for its six public computers. Students use their print allocation, deducted from their WKU IDs to print. In previous years, the ERC had an older laser printer that finally bit the dust just after the Fall 2012 semester began. Print capabilities are a popular service for students, and thanks are due to Interim Libraries’ Dean Connie Foster, Library Public Services Head Dr. Brian Coutts, and Director of Academic Technology Dr. John Bowers and IT/AT teams for their quick installation of the new set-up.

On the evening of November 15, 2012, at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Bowling Green, KY, WKU Libraries featured Professor Williams in its Far Away Places talk series. She talked about her book A Rare Titanic Family: The Caldwells’ Story of Survival and told the story of how her great uncle Albert Caldwell’s family were one of the few to survive the sinking of the Titanic. The event was concluded with book signing.

WKU vs Youngstown, 2002
If anyone had told me when I was in school that one day I would get paid to identify college logos on football helmets I would have laughed. Some days that’s exactly what I do.
Processing photographs involves evaluation of quality in relation to other similar images in the collection.
WKU vs WIU, 2002, long focus
Identification of people, places and events and even athletic teams. Rehousing in mylar sleeves and acid free folders. And occasionally discarding images due to blurriness or poor composition.
WKU Archives holds approximately 50,000 photographs, slides, negatives and drawings. Photographs are described in bulk by topic in KenCat, our online catalog. Broad topics include campus buildings, portraits, organizations, athletics and events. As researchers request images for projects, they are digitized. At that time a thumbnail image and corresponding description are entered into KenCat. To date, a little over 9,000 have been digitized. The Kentucky Library & Archives in coordination with the Council of State Archivists have declared today the first Electronic Records Day. At WKU faculty, staff and students are creating records on computers every day.
Electronic records are wonderful. They can be shared through email, thumb drives, or on computer servers. They can enable greater collaboration in research at increased speed. Some contain confidential information that need special protection.
The WKU Records Management program identifies permanent and non-permanent records created by faculty and staff. We also assist departments in the maintenance and preservation of those records in all formats. In addition, we provide guidelines for the proper destruction of non-permanent records.
WKU Archives is working to capture and store permanent electronic records that have historic and administrative value in order to make them available to researchers for generations to come. One avenue is through TopScholar, WKU’s institutional repository. Here you will find departmental and administrative electronic records that document decisions of administrators and campus activities.

Morgan Atkinson, writer and producer of Wonder, gave a presentation at the Kentucky Building in the WKU Libraries Kentucky Live! talk series on the evening of September 27, 2012. The presentation was a 20 minute preview of his new film about the lives of Anna and Harlan Hubbard first premiering in November.

Wonder: The Lives of Anna and Harlan Hubbard
Anna and Harlan Hubbard led their lives as few people in modern times have – representing the pioneers of sustainability. Living in a house they built, sustained by food they raised or caught, supported by no electricity, the Hubbards, found their way without modern conveniences.
Morgan Atkinson, writer and producer of Wonder, lives in Louisville, KY, and has been recognized for his work documenting the philosopher/monk Thomas Merton, the writer/social activist John Howard Griffen and many more in the 25 years of his career.
This presentation by Mr. Atkinson will be a 20 minute preview of the new film Wonder first premiering in November. The narrative and art is from the Hubbard’s journals, and will be accompanied by excerpts from Wendell Berry’s book on their lives. Will Oldham and Katie Weible will be the voices of Harlan and Anna. Soundtrack by: Ray Lamontagne.

Composed of more than 66,000 pieces, the unique Spectrum Quilt can be seen through October 28 as part of an exhibit, Man-Made Quilts: the Civil War to the Present, at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. Its maker, George Yarrall, was an immigrant from New Zealand who worked as an engraver at Morris Jewelry in Bowling Green, KY. Yarrall not only kept the colored paper template used in designing the textile, he also recorded in a handwritten note that the quilt was started on July 2, 1933 and finished two years later on December 30, 1935. The Spectrum Quilt is one of four quilts in the Kentucky Museum collection of nearly 200 quilts that are attributed to men.

A broadside found in the Moore House at 801 State Street in Bowling Green reveals resolutions supporting Matthew Lyon and his bid for the election of 1802. Lyon was born in Ireland in 1749 but immigrated to Connecticut in 1764. He served with the Green Mountain Boys and lived in Vermont before moving to Kentucky. He served four terms as the Congressional Representative from the Western District of Kentucky and was first elected in the fall of 1802. Lyon was the first person to be put to trial for violating the Alien and Sedition Acts and criticizing President John Adams thus becoming a defender of free speech rights. The broadside entitled, Resolutions of the Corresponding Society was produced in Russellville, KY and condemns the criticisms of Lyon.
