Foreword by Pete Best. Nicholson’s early upbringing started on a Thoroughbred farm in Lexington where his childhood, work, and livelihood all related to horse-racing. In graduate school, his research topic essentially “chose” him given the context of his experiences. The Kentucky Derby is perhaps the most famous international horse race which goes beyond a race event. Its “Derby Culture” which Nicholson so eloquently describes is beyond the event. It is a part of the local community as much as a part of Kentucky’s and its citizens’ pride and glory to the world. Some of the most interesting literature on the Derby involves human interest pieces that exhibit the characters involved behind the scenes.
