Award-winning Southern novelist Janna McMahan, a native of Campbellsville, Kentucky, spoke about her experience of the deep south during her writing career at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Bowling Green, Kentucky on the evening of April 17, 2011. Her presentation was part of the WKU Libraries’ “Kentucky Live!” talk series.

On March 24-25, WKU Libraries participated in the 2nd Annual Health Literacy Summit, a multidisciplinary meeting of health professionals, health insurers, and librarians. Hosted at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green, the Health Literacy Summit heightened awareness of health literacy and its impact on patient outcomes. A consumer with good health literacy has the ability to obtain, comprehend, and use information related to health and wellness.
Health Sciences Librarian Carol Watwood presented a poster session, “Take Action for Better Health: The Best Web-Based Health Information to Address Kentucky’s Health Challenges.” This presentation highlighted the role of libraries in improving health literacy.

On the evening of March 17 at Barnes & Noble, the WKU Libraries’ “Far Away Places” international talk series featured Professor John All from WKU’s Department of Geography & Geology. While studying climate change in the Himalayas in 2010 as part of the Fulbright Scholar program, he scaled the treacherous northeast ridge and reached the summit of Mount Everest, at 29,035 ft. the world’s highest mountain on May 23rd.

This Thursday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Barnes & Noble Bookstore, University of North Alabama historian Matthew Schoenbachler talked about Kentucky’s most famous murder case. After his talk, Schoenbachler signed his new book Murder & Madness: The Myth of the Kentucky Tragedy.

On the evening of February 17, 2011, Professor Yuan gave a presentation at Barnes & Noble as part of WKU Libraries’ “Far Away Places” international talk series. He talked about the changes taking place in China over the history, particularly after it opened it up and went through the economic reform in the late 1970’s. He looked at China through the window of Tianjin, a large city he knows best because he grew up there and has frequented it almost every year since 2000.

Some 371,000 German prisoners of war were held in the United States between 1941 and 1947 including 9,000 in Kentucky. On the evening of February 10, 2011, Professor Antonio Thompson, a historian from Austin Peay University, who recently taught at West Point, talked about how they came to be here, what they did during the war, the problems involved in managing POW camps and their eventual return to Europe after the war at Barnes & Noble in Bowling Green Kentucky. His talk was part of the WKU Libraries’ Kentucky Live! talk series.

University Libraries has recently acquired seven paintings by Phoenix Latino artist Julio Cesar Rodarte. These are on display in the café’s lower level. New furnishings have also been acquired with support from the SGA.
The oldest of four children, Rodarte was born in Fresnillo, Zacatecas in 1984. Three years later the family immigrated to the United States. He took his first art classes in high school in Arizona after his psychologist and school counselor encouraged him to take a drawing class after a failed suicide attempt.

At the age of 19 he enrolled at Glendale Community College where he discovered his talent for painting. Since then he’s developed his unique style in which he first develops a sculptural form and then paints on the shapes with colorful repetitive patterns, geometric shapes, forms, silhouettes, and numbers. In 2008 he began showing his art in group shows in Phoenix and had his first solo exhibition “Over and Over” at Arizona State University’s Downtown Campus in Phoenix in 2009. Since then the 26 year old painter has continued to have solo and group shows such as “Shapes”, a March 2010 solo exhibition and “Arte Latino en la Ciudad”, a May 2010 group show at the Phoenix Center for the Arts.
His art has been collected by corporations and private collectors. He says he continues “to paint with determination” in his studio in Phoenix.

Dr. John Dizgun from KIIS and Dr. Holli Drummond from the Department of Sociology, WKU shared their research discovery in youth and gang violence in Medellin, Columbia with a large audience at Barnes & Noble on the evening of Thursday, November 18. Their presentation was part of a Far Away Places talk series sponsored by WKU Libraries.

We’re pleased to announce that a painting by Granville Mitchell from the Kentucky African American Art Collection in the Raymond Cravens Library is featured on the front cover of the nation’s leading college and university libraries trade journal. With more than 12,000 personal and institutional subscribers and an international readership many times that number, College & Research Libraries News showcases the work of the Association of College and Research Libraries and its member institutions. Mitchell, who studied commercial art at WKU, works on paper with pen and ink, acrylic, oil, and some airbrush. In his works he seeks to capture movement, the dynamic of life.
“Main Street” is one of two Granville Mitchell paintings in our collection.
Mitchell’s art was showcased in Kentucky Live! Southern Culture At Its Best, an annual series of public talks sponsored by the WKU Libraries, now in its eighth season. He also depicted the Historic Freedom Riders in a collaborative mural honoring the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at the Kentucky Library and Museum.
This marks the third time WKU Libraries has been featured on the front cover of C&RL News.
